STEP-UP STEP-DOWN (SUSD)

A Peer-Run Residential Option for Recovery Transitions

At Connections Peer Support, we know recovery isn’t always a straight path. Sometimes people
need to transition into greater support while navigating mental health challenges, or to move on from a hospital setting into a transitional period as they prepare to return to their communities and continue their journey of wellness.

Our Step-Up Step-Down (SUSD) program provides exactly that: voluntary & non-clinical residential treatment where peers support peers through life’s transitions.

WHAT IS STEP-UP STEP-DOWN?

SUSD is a peer-run alternative to hospitalization designed for adults experiencing mental health challenges. Participants can choose to “step up” into the program when additional support is needed, or “step down” after inpatient treatment to ease the transition back home.

This is not a medical or clinical facility—it’s a peer-driven, trauma-informed environment where staff with lived experience provide encouragement, connection, and 24/7 support.

“In 10 years I have not felt more at home than I did at your house–SUSD.”

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Stays typically last 90 days, but depend on each person’s needs and goals. Residents live in a home-like setting with private bedrooms and shared common spaces. Each individual directs their own recovery journey while being supported by peers who understand.

During their stay, residents can:

  • Continue work, school, or community involvement
  • Develop or refine personal wellness and recovery plans
  • Access peer-led groups, activities, and daily support
  • Build confidence before returning home or moving into a higher level of care

“I’d be here forever listing all the ways this program has helped me. I can’t even put it into words.”

-Travis, former resident

WHY CHOOSE A PEER-RUN RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM?

Traditional mental health systems often rely on clinical oversight and medical interventions. While those options are valuable for some, many people benefit from a peer-based model that emphasizes choice, empowerment, and shared experience.

SUSD offers:

A safe, welcoming, drug- and alcohol-free environment

Staff trained in Peer Support

Opportunities to practice recovery skills in real-life settings

A bridge between hospital care and community living

“I felt like I had my old son back after SUSD.”
